Smart Choices, Smart Communities

Teen Talk newsletter for teens
Straight Talk newsletter for parents

Smart Choices, Smart Communities, a federally-funded Title V abstinence education program, is designed to change behaviors in teens 12-18 along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The program is abstinence-only, not abstinence-based, meaning that we do not promote contraception, but do promote abstinence as the only 100% effective means to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

Smart Choices, Smart Communities uses only the A-H Title V compliant components of Boys & Girls Clubs of America's SMART (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) programs, Passport to Manhood, and Sex Can Wait curricula.

It will also include the Choosing the Best curriculum, which closely aligns to the A-H conditions of Title V and provides strong abstinence modules for specific age groups, parents, and communities.

The percentage of Mississippi students who have had sexual intercourse is 14.3% higher than the national average. The percentage of Mississippi students who have been pregnant or gotten someone pregnant is 3.3% higher. The national average teen birth rate is 43/1000; while Mississippi's teen birth rate is 65/1000; one of the highest in the nation.

Our abstinence educators have been trained by certified facilitators and curricula developers from Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Choosing the Best, and Sex Can Wait. They work closely with community leaders and teen peer leaders to determine effective delivery methods.

Smart Choices, Smart Communities offers free programs within the Gulf Coast community, especially Harrison and Hancock counties, on topics including:
